All employees who work with clients complete a 48 to 52-hour training curriculum prior to working with students or adults (new employees who provide current certificates may be waived from courses such as CPR and First Aid). All other employees attend 34 hours of the same curriculum. This ensures a commonn understanding among all employees about the clients Grafton serves, their needs, treatment philosophy, the work of direct support employees, and Grafton’s policies and procedures. Grafton’s Pre-service Curriculum provides the foundation for initially working with clients and the subsequent on the job training that the employee’s supervisor will provide.
The Pre-Service Curriculum consists of the following topics:
- Personnel orientation, as well as harassment training and Code of Conduct.

An Introduction to Grafton including Grafton’s mission, vision, structure, services, goals, and the roles of those who provide program services including the role of the direct support professional.

Person and Family Centered Services; Individualized Planning

Human Rights including recognizing abuse and neglect, reporting violations of rights as well as observed an alleged abuse and neglect, and investigation and de-briefing of such incidents.

Health Insurance Portatbility and Accountability Act – protecting client health information

Characteristics and Needs of Individuals Served

Behavior Supports, Policies and Procedures - including how to respond to serious behavioral situations

Behavior Crisis Intervention (The Mandt System in our Berryville and Winchester programs and Therapeutic Options of Virginia in our Richmond program; and Alternatives to Restraint and Seclusion – Extraordinary Blocking)

Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Response

Documentation including standards of documentation, daily documentation of progress and serious incidents; serious incident debriefing.

Cultural Competence

General Health and Safety and Infection Control

Client Health and Safety including epilepsy, providing basic care, responding to medical emergencies and non-emergencies.

First Aid and CPR
Other Training Required within the first six months includes:
- Vehicle Use and Client Transportation

Community MR Waiver (for those who work withc clients funded through that program)

Medication Aide Training (an additional 32-hour curriculum required for any employee prior to administering medication)

Basic Psychopharmacology (required for employees who work within client programs and who will not administer medication)

Direct Support Employees are also required to complete specific assignments designed to help them learn about specific clients and complete online courses: Introduction to Human Services and Professionalism; Assessment; Health and Wellness; Supporting Skill Development.
Initial Supervisor and Manager TrainingIn addition to the Pre-Service Curriculum, supervisors and managers are required to complete specific courses related to Grafton’s policies and procedures as they pertain to their job roles. They also receive training on employee management models, the Job Ladder Systemand how to utilize the performance-based job description to manage employee performance.
