Weaving Meaning into the Classroom
It’s back-to-school season! While our students at Grafton learn and grow with us all year round, we couldn’t resist jumping in on the back-to-school excitement.
Our dedicated teachers work tirelessly through every season to build spaces where students feel safe, seen, and supported. To celebrate the spirit of the season, we are thrilled to shine the spotlight on Virginia Simmons, a longtime teacher at our Berryville campus, and her thoughtfully curated classroom.
Virginia consistently goes above and beyond to ensure her students feel empowered, inspired, and encouraged. Her classroom beautifully illustrates how intentional, thoughtful design can boost creativity and inspire students to take true ownership of their learning environment.
She recently shared a few favorite corners of her classroom, detailing the heartfelt meaning and intention behind each space.
“The blacklight room was inspired by the idea of creating a soothing environment where students could regulate in a way that feels both calming and empowering. The bright colors, student handprints, and glowing visuals give them a sense of ownership and pride. It’s a space where they can decompress but also see themselves reflected in the environment.”
“One of my favorite parts of the classroom is the puzzle piece wall. Each piece was completed by a student who has since been discharged, and together they form a connected puzzle. The idea behind it is simple: every student is always a piece of our classroom, even after they move on. It’s a visual reminder of growth, connection, and the impact they leave behind.”
“Another area I love is our Alice in Wonderland collage. Students each colored a different character or scene, and after laminating their artwork, we created an entire wall display. It’s a great example of how meaningful décor doesn’t have to be purchased — my students decorate the classroom with their ideas, creativity, and pride. Because they help create the space, they respect it and take care of it.”
The environment you create communicates a powerful message to those who occupy it. It is evident that Virginia’s classroom sends a clear message to her students – both past and present – that they matter, their ideas matter, and their impact lasts.
